Bathed in sunlight on the western ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains and at the northern end of the Mount Veeder appellation, this vineyard sits at 1,800 feet and struggles in rugged volcanic terrain. Shallow soils low in minerals and nutrients challenge the vitality of the vines and produce small berries with intensely concentrated fruit. The wine is full-bodied and structured, with layers of blue and black fruit and wet stone minerality. It's a superb candidate for cellaring.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is as compelling a Cabernet Sauvignon as one could ever hope to taste. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a high-elevation site boasts an inky/purple color, and smells of ink, blueberry liqueur, blackberries, black raspberries, mulberries, licorice, charcoal and camphor. With magnificent fruit richness, a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, and incredible length, this seamlessly constructed 2012 should provide immense pleasure for 25+ years. Kudos to winemaker Chris Carpenter as he is clearly at the top of his game.

Dusty, cedary oak nuances stand apart from the core red berry and blackberry fruit, giving this a drying sensation. Time should help, but for now this remains top-heavy and woody. Best from 2017 through 2027. 1,307 cases made.
