Ponzi Vineyards Classico Pinot Noir 2014
|Region||United States, Oregon, Willamette Valley|
"Editors' Choice" The first vintage for this re-branded, mid-level Ponzi Pinot is a doozy. Lovely aromatics offer a plush potpourri of plum, blueberry and cherry fruit, along with hints of curry, chocolate and hickory chips. Flavors are nicely entwined, round and full bodied, with a streak of root beer. This is ready to enjoy now and over the next couple of years.
Fresh and vital, focusing the black cherry, lime and spice flavors into a spotlight that glows through the generous, expressive finish. Drink now through 2021. 7,400 cases made.
The 2014 Pinot Noir Classico (previously known as the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir) comes mainly from the Aurora Vineyard. It is completely destemmed and matured in 35% new oak for 11 months. It has a comely and lightly spiced bouquet that is soft and pure. The palate is crisp on the entry with just a touch of earthiness, a little sturdier in structure than I was expecting, but with the sweet red berry fruit coming back towards the finish. Give it six months in bottle and drink over 4-5 years.
